Germany has also implemented attractive means to obtain a visa work for computer scientists who are not nationals of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland (referred to as third countries). The path that suits you best depends on your qualifications and the job offer you have in Germany.

  • EU Blue Card: If you hold a university or tertiary degree formally recognized in the field of IT and have a concrete job offer in Germany, you can obtain an EU Blue Card. It is important that you earn a certain minimum salary with your job in Germany. Even if you do not possess such a degree, you can still obtain the EU Blue Card if you have acquired knowledge and skills in a comparable profession through at least three years of professional experience within the last seven years. The EU Blue Card is a particularly popular residence permit that offers many benefits.
  • Work visa for skilled workers: A residence permit for a skilled job (in accordance with Article 18a or Article 18b of the Residence Act - AufenthG) may be considered for you if you have completed vocational training or higher education in IT that is recognized or equivalent in Germany, but you do not meet the requirements for the EU Blue Card.
  • Work visa for workers with professional experience: Even without a formal vocational or university degree, you can work in Germany as an IT specialist if you can prove professional experience in the field of IT. You can find more information about this visa in the section "Work visa for workers with professional experience."
