With the Opportunity Card (Article 20a of the Residence Act - AufenthG), you improve your chances of making contacts with German employers and finding a qualified job in Germany.

What are the requirements to obtain an Opportunity Card?
If you come from a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland and wish to apply for an Opportunity Card under Article 20a of the Residence Act - AufenthG, the following options are available:
Option 1: You hold a foreign professional or academic qualification that is fully recognized in Germany. Alternatively, you have obtained your university or vocational degree in Germany.
Conseil
If you have obtained your university or vocational degree in Germany, you can directly apply for a residence permit for job search under Article 20 of the Residence Act - AufenthG. This will give you more time to search (18 months instead of one year) and allow you to work alongside without restrictions during this period. Option 2: You score at least six points in the points system and must also meet the following requirements:
- You have successfully completed vocational training or your studies. It is important that this degree is recognized by the state in the country where it was obtained. For vocational qualifications, it is also necessary that the training lasts a minimum of two years. As proof for the visa application, you will need the positive confirmation (positive Auskunft) of this degree, which can be requested online from The Central Office for Education Abroad (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen - ZAB).
Conseil
If you have completed an A-category training with a Chamber of Commerce and Industry abroad (AHK) that meets the requirements of the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz) regarding vocational training, it may also be suitable. You will obtain more information from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry abroad where you received your qualification. - Proof of language skills: You have German language skills at least at level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), or English language skills at least at level B2 (CEFR).
Guarantee of living expenses:
Your stay in Germany to search for a job must be financially secured, both for Option 1 and Option 2. As part of the visa process, you can prove this by opening a blocked account (generally at least 1,091 euros net per month, amount valid for 2025) or by presenting a declaration of sponsorship
How does the points system work for the Opportunity Card?
The points system only applies to Option 2, meaning if you cannot provide a German training qualification or full recognition of your foreign qualification. For your 'Opportunity Card' visa application, you must also present a formal qualification and the required language skills. You can earn points for the following criteria:
- Équivalence de la qualification : si vous avez déjà demandé la procédure de reconnaissance de votre qualification étrangère et que l’équivalence partielle a été établie comme résultat, vous obtenez quatre points. Ces quatre points sont également attribués si, dans le cas d’un métier réglementé, des mesures compensatoires sont encore nécessaires pour obtenir l'autorisation d’exercice de la profession.
- Qualification dans un métier en pénurie : si votre qualification formelle fait partie d’un métier en pénurie, vous obtenez un point. Pour savoir quelles professions sont considérées comme des métiers en pénurie, consultez la liste des métiers en pénurie.
- Expérience professionnelle : vous obtiendrez également des points pour votre expérience professionnelle antérieure en rapport avec votre qualification formelle, acquise après l'obtention de votre diplôme. Si vous pouvez justifier d’une expérience professionnelle d’au moins deux ans au cours des cinq dernières années, vous obtenez deux points. Si vous avez au moins cinq ans d’expérience professionnelle au cours des sept dernières années, vous obtenez même trois points.
- Connaissances linguistiques : si vos connaissances en allemand dépassent le niveau A1 (CECRL), vous pouvez obtenir des points. Les connaissances linguistiques en allemand de niveau A2 sont évaluées à un point, celles de niveau B1 à deux points et celles de niveau B2 ou plus à trois points. Un point supplémentaire est également attribué pour des connaissances linguistiques en anglais au moins de niveau C1 ou si vous êtes de langue maternelle anglaise.
- Âge : vous obtenez aussi des points si vous avez un certain âge. Les personnes qui n’ont pas plus de 35 ans obtiennent deux points jusqu’à la date exacte de leur 35ème anniversaire. Toutes celles qui ont entre 35 et 40 ans obtiennent un point.
- Séjour préalable en Allemagne : avez-vous déjà vécu en Allemagne ? Si vous pouvez prouver avoir séjourné légalement et sans interruption en Allemagne pendant au moins six mois au cours des cinq dernières années, vous obtenez un point. Cela comprend, par exemple, les séjours pour les études, les cours de langue ou l’emploi. Les séjours purement touristiques ou de visite sont exclus. Comme preuve, vous pouvez fournir des copies d’anciens passeports ainsi que les visas et tampons d’entrée qu’ils contiennent.
- Potentiel du/de la conjoint(e)/partenaire en tant que travailleur/travailleuse qualifié(e) : vous êtes marié(e) ou pacsé(e) et souhaitez immigrer en Allemagne en compagnie de votre conjoint(e) avec la carte des opportunités ? Si votre partenaire remplit déjà les conditions pour obtenir la carte des opportunités, vous obtenez un point dans le système de points.
